Aida

At the Nile’s edge, the enslaved Nubian princess, Aida becomes romantically entangled with the Egyptian captain, Radames, who is betrothed to the Pharaoh’s daughter, Amneris. As their forbidden love grows deeper, Aida is forced to find balance between her heart’s yearning for Radames, and her responsibility to lead her people.

Based on the opera by Giuseppe Verdi, Elton John and Time Rice's Aida is a timeless love story, featuring an award-winning pop/rock score from the seasoned pop duo who brought musical life to Disney’s The Lion King. Rousing rock numbers and heart-wrenching ballads bring the ill-fated lovers into a new era.

Stinney: An American Execution (Alma Stinney)

An involuntary symbol of sickening injustice, George Junius Stinney Jr. was executed at the age of 14. Having been wrongly accused and convicted of the rape and murder of two white girls in Alcolu, SC, in 1944, George became the youngest person legally executed in 20th-century America. Stinney tells the story of George, his family, his community, and the jury of ten white men that sent an innocent black boy to the electric chair. A new opera with roots in both gospel and electronic techniques, Stinney: An American Execution spotlights the anger and agony of the entire populous of Alcolu, connecting the dots to our own socio-political climate in 2019 and the pervasive “fear of the other.”

Fire Songs

FireSongs is a new music performance work by Thomas Cabaniss that challenges the form of traditional operas and concerts as a multimedia, fully-staged version of this poetic tapestry. With texts taken from prose by Mark Strand, W.H. Auden, Wendell Berry and Langston Hughes, the piece explores the edges, limits of all things—ultimately telling the greater story of what it means to be alive. Acclaimed director and newly appointed Creative Director of Bare Opera, Malena Dayen, and music director David Rosenmeyer, guide this world premiere—that will also mark Bare Opera’s return to the “theater”—on June 18, 2022 at the Chelsea Factory as a part of the National Sawdust season programming.

The Sound of Charleston

Experience the sounds that define Charleston, South Carolina and its unique southern charm — jazz, gospel, Gershwin, Gullah, spirituals, Civil War songs — coming to life in historic Circular Congregational Church.

For over three centuries, Charleston’s musical heritage has been as diverse as the people who’ve lived here – haunting spirituals of slaves first arriving in America through our port; Civil War camp songs from both sides in this place where the first shots were fired; pieces such as Amazing Grace and Pachelbel’s Canon that are wonderfully connected to the history of this great city; and, of course, “Porgy and Bess,” inspired and composed in Charleston by the incomparable George Gershwin. This is but a snapshot of the rich array of music that makes up The Sound of Charleston.
